The University of Bologna, Alma Mater Studiorum (UBO), was founded in 1088 and is considered the oldest university in Western Europe. Nowadays, it still remains one of the most important institutions of higher education in Europe with more than 100,000 enrolled students, 23 faculties, 69 departments, 3000 academics and 3000 administrative staff. The Department of Human and General Physiology was established in 1815 and hosts advanced research in a number of fields ranging from cellular and molecular neurophysiology, synaptic plasticity, to learning and memory, neurophysiology and neuroanatomy of visuomotor systems, and physiological regulation in the wake-sleep cycle. It hosts 1 emeritus professor, 5 full professors, 9 associate professors, 6 university researchers, over 5 technical and 4 administrative staff, 16 PhD students and 7 laboratories.
